Yangmadao means the island of horse-raising. Local legends show the area's horse-raising history can be traced back to the time of China's first emperor, Qinshihuang (259-210 BC). In 209 BC, Qinshihuang passed by Moushan in Mouping district during his east tour and was pleased with the charming scenery and lush grass lands, on which herds of wild horses raced.
